Lakeside House wins HIŠE award 2010

NOW’s Lakeside House received the HIŠE award for sustainable excellence in private housing in Lubljana, Slovenia on May 15th!
NOW is a Helsinki-based practice operating in the joint fields of architecture, urbanism, strategy, design and communication. We develop and design for now, the contemporary condition. The scale and scope of the work extends from city to object, from strategy to detail. Our mission is to make the world more interesting and enjoyable.

As part of the Sino-Finnish Architecture Symposium organised by Tianjin University & UED, Tuomas held a lecture and participated in a roundtable discussion with Teemu Kurkela from JKMM and Zhang Ke from Standard Architecture. As part pf the event, the university architecture gallery opened an exhibtion on Contemporary Finnish Architecture featuring NOW’s work.

Tuomas has been nominated by SAFA to the board of the Museum of Finnish Architecture. He has been invited to join the Energy Efficient Built Environment workgroup, jointly run by the Ministry of the Environment, Sitra and Tekes. Also, he is part of the Finnish delegation to the Shanghai 2010 EXPO and co-producing the Snowball Architecture events in Helsinki and Shanghai.

NOW has completed the first phase of design for an area of 50 floating houses called “Verkkosaaren Spektri” in the Helsinki East Harbour. The area’s new masterplan, based on these designs, and is to be reviewed by the City Planning Council this spring. Construction is scheduled to start in 2011.

NOW collaborated with REX and Croxton Collaborative on Sitra’s Low2No challenge to lead a multidisciplinary team of sustainability experts. We were commissioned to devise a low carbon future strategy for Finland, design new sustainability indicators and propose an exemplary urban block for Helsinki’s Jätkäsaari. A video with music and narration made for the NEWLY DRAWN exhibition. It’s a double track affair combining “the history of urban planning in 2 minutes and 33 seconds set to music” in the form of U = Utopia and the low carbon club anthem More = Less, based on our work for Low2No / Sitra on sustainable urbanism.

NOW’s Hakunila housing scheme is being reviewed by the City of Vantaa Urban Planning Board in March, as Vantaa’s Urban Planning Department has prepared a amendment proposal for the lot use. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2011

The final report for the Greater Helsinki Vision 2050 continuation work can be downloaded here (in Finnish). The report contains analysis and assessment of ideas from the competition phase, workshop and citizen participation results and policy recommendations for future planning for the metropolitan region. In collaboration with WSP Finland, YTK/TKK and Demos Helsinki.
